Philosophy topic 8/02/19
In philosophy we were given a prompt to discuss. The prompt was a story about how people who are in a state of poverty lost their cat to a car accident and ended up eating the cat to fill their stomachs. In our pair discussion, I was talking about how in a situation such as do or die, moral and ethics are completely disregarded. The other groups were talking about how its immoral to eat a cat, which lead to the discussion of what defines that an animal is morally right to eat.
I said that people see eating certain animals as immoral is only because that animal has some sort of other value that is greater than just being food, such as cats and dogs with their companionship, whereas a chicken's companionship is not what's primarily valued by humans. A friend of mine said that it is immoral and a waste to kill an animal that is useful for something else other than food, such as, as mentioned, cats for their companionship, horses for mobility and such.
One of the girls talked about the health and sanitary problems of eating a cat that died in a car crash, saying how it can be dangerous and unhygienic.
In the end, moral and ethics are just what a certain society see as acceptable or unacceptable. Doing the right thing doesn't really have a big impact in the end, its just that the person becomes free of guilt and attains a feeling of righteousness. There's no hell or heaven that we go to based on our actions, so just do what you want.
